The Hidden Risks of Pregnancy in America

The Hidden Risks of Pregnancy in America

Brief Overview

Pregnancy is often portrayed as a joyful and life-affirming experience, but the reality is that it poses significant risks to women’s health, particularly in the United States. Despite advances in medical care, pregnancy-related complications and deaths are on the rise, with alarming disparities affecting Black and low-income women.

The Alarming Statistics

In the US, pregnancy-related deaths have increased by 56% in states that banned abortion, with Black women being three times more likely to die than white women (1). According to the CDC, more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, yet the country continues to grapple with a maternal mortality crisis (10).

The Impact of Abortion Bans

The overturning of Roe v. Wade has exacerbated the problem, with 14 states banning or severely restricting abortion access. This has led to a rise in unintended pregnancies, which can have devastating consequences for women’s health and economic stability (2).

The Unseen Risks

Pregnancy can trigger a range of complications, including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and mental health disorders. Women with preexisting conditions, such as hypertension, are at even greater risk (3).

The Disproportionate Burden

Black women are disproportionately affected by pregnancy-related complications and deaths, with a mortality rate three times higher than white women. This is due to systemic inequities, lack of access to healthcare, and socioeconomic factors (1).

A Call to Action

The US must prioritize women’s health and reproductive rights to address the maternal mortality crisis. This includes ensuring access to safe and affordable abortion, improving prenatal care, and addressing systemic inequities.

As Chris Moses notes in Renewal: A Story of Survival and Self-Discovery, “Healing is a journey, not a destination” (Moses, n.d.). By acknowledging the hidden risks of pregnancy and working towards solutions, we can create a safer and more equitable healthcare system for all women.
